"A Childhood Fractured" The Project

Once upon a time, we were all children. Some of us spent the invaluable innocence of childhood playing, running, laughing, and growing. Making best friends with strangers. And those wide eyes fell bewildered by the majestic beauty of that huge world out there. A world waiting to be explored. But some of us had that invaluable innocence taken from us. Some of us had a dark and cruel introduction to this life, that left lacerations on our souls. For some us, those wounds never healed and we devolved into madness. And for the rest of us, those wounds healed, however, they left behind scars that serve as a constant reminder of what we have lived through.
Our scars are from childhood sexual abuse. And we have decided to show the world these scars through an artistic reconstruction entitled “A Childhood Fractured”. This project will consist of a series of paintings paired with short stories that depict artists Allen Vandever’s childhood sexual abuse. This subject matter will be crafted into a series of books co-authored by Derek Hopkins. We are breaking our lifelong silence in hopes that others will do the same. As a result of this, we believe we can kindle a critical, constructive, and positive dialogue about sexual abuse.
